In 1984, a wristwatch that could record your voice still felt like science fiction. The Seiko M516 "Voice Note," released in 1983, could store a few seconds of spoken audio in onboard memory and play it back through a tiny speaker, alongside the usual stopwatch and a backlight. Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters put it on the team, and Dan Aykroyd's Ray Stantz wears one as standard kit, right there with the proton packs and PKE meters.
Seiko spent the early 1980s cramming every function it could think of into a wristwatch: calculators, a television, and this voice recorder. The M516 suited a paranormal-investigation outfit, and Ghostbusters fans and watch collectors have chased the model ever since, partly because it was made in small numbers and is now genuinely rare.
