John McTiernan's The Hunt for Red October (1990) is a Cold War submarine thriller in which Sean Connery's Captain Ramius tries to defect with the Soviet Union's most advanced submarine, while Alec Baldwin's CIA analyst Jack Ryan is the one who works out that Ramius means to defect rather than attack. Courtney B. Vance plays Petty Officer Ronald "Jonesy" Jones, the sonar technician aboard the USS Dallas who first detects the Red October, loses it when it runs silent, and finds it again by ear.

Jonesy's watch has been identified as a Casio AMW-320, the marine reference AMW320R-1EV, an analog-digital quartz with a tide graph and moon-phase display, water resistant to 200 meters and priced under $100. It is the practical, affordable kind of watch an enlisted sonar man would actually own, though the dim sonar-room lighting keeps it from being clearly legible on screen.
