Sonny Crockett is an undercover Miami-Dade detective working the South Florida drug economy from the inside, posing as the kind of man who buys fast boats off money that does not ask questions. Colin Farrell plays him in Michael Mann's Miami Vice (2006), Mann's own adaptation of his 1980s series. On Farrell's wrist is a Vacheron Constantin Malte Chronograph Perpetual Calendar in platinum, an improbably expensive watch for a cop on a stakeout.

The Malte Chronograph Perpetual Calendar is among Vacheron's most complicated pieces: a tonneau-shaped platinum case, chronograph subdials, and a perpetual calendar that tracks leap years to 2100 without correction, costing six figures new. On Crockett it is the cover, not the cop. Mann committed to that verisimilitude completely, and was impressed enough that Vacheron's CEO presented him with his own after the shoot.
