January is Hollywood's dumping ground for movies studios don't believe in. Deep Rising landed there in 1998, a B-movie about mercenaries who board a luxury cruise liner in the South China Sea to rob it, only to find the passengers already devoured by massive tentacled creatures beneath the hull. Stephen Sommers wrote and directed it, and the flop somehow got him the job directing The Mummy the following year. The cast was better than the material deserved: Treat Williams, Famke Janssen, Wes Studi, Djimon Hounsou, Cliff Curtis, and Jason Flemyng.
Clifton Powell plays Mason, one of the mercenaries under Wes Studi's command. His gold-tone watch is visible in a close-up as he grips a Beretta: round case, dark dial, metal bracelet. The brand is not identifiable from the still, but the gold tone fits the character — a hired gun who wants to look like he has more money than he does. Powell built a career playing tough supporting roles in films like Menace II Society and Dead Presidents, and Mason is cut from the same cloth: a hard man who talks big and dies badly.
