Searle can't stop looking at the sun. In Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007), Cliff Curtis plays the ship's psychologist and doctor aboard Icarus II, humanity's second and final attempt to reignite a dying star. Cillian Murphy is the physicist carrying the nuclear payload. Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rose Byrne, and Benedict Wong fill out the crew. The film is hard science fiction for most of its runtime, until it becomes something stranger and more terrifying.
Curtis wears a CWC military watch, and that choice says something about the production's commitment to getting the details right. CWC (Cabot Watch Company) has supplied watches to the British Ministry of Defence since 1980. Their military pieces are issued to Royal Navy, Army, and RAF personnel, and they're built to mil-spec standards: luminous hands, screw-down back, simple three-hand dial with no complications. Boyle and his team dressed the Icarus II crew as military-adjacent scientists, and the CWC is exactly what a government-funded mission would issue. It's not a fashion choice. It's kit. On Searle, a man increasingly drawn to staring directly into the thing that will kill him, the functional simplicity of the CWC stands in sharp contrast to his psychological disintegration.
