Christoph Waltz won two Oscars playing charming men who do terrible things, and August Rosenbluth fits the pattern. Francis Lawrence directed Water for Elephants (2011), based on Sara Gruen's novel about a Depression-era circus, with Waltz as the ringmaster who is equal parts showman and abuser. Robert Pattinson plays the veterinary student who joins the circus and falls for Waltz's wife, played by Reese Witherspoon.
August's watch has not been identified. It has been described as a square-faced piece on a brown leather strap, which is period-appropriate for a 1930s circus owner who wants to project authority. A rectangular or square case was fashionable in that era, and a man like August would care about fashion even in the middle of a Depression-era tent show. He runs his circus the way he runs everything else: with charm on the surface and violence underneath.
