Christoph Waltz wears a Hamilton Ventura

Benjamin Chudnofsky has an image problem. In The Green Hornet, Christoph Waltz plays the Los Angeles crime boss as a man quietly worried that he is no longer frightening, who spends the film angling for reassurance that he is still scary and even tries out a flashier new name. On his wrist is an asymmetric Hamilton Ventura on a black and gold strap.

The Ventura is one of the more recognizable watches ever made. Hamilton introduced it in 1957 with a case by the industrial designer Richard Arbib, and it was the first electric watch ever sold, a battery where the mainspring used to be. Its shape, a triangular shield that is neither round nor square, looked like nothing else then and still does. Elvis Presley wore one, and decades later it became the watch of the Men in Black.

The identification here comes from watch-spotting coverage, led by the French site Montres de Luxe, which describes Chudnofsky's as a Ventura on a black and gold strap. It is the consensus across the watch sites, but the film never holds on the watch long enough to settle it on screen. In the clearest still, Chudnofsky's wrist is busy holding a newspaper that blames the Green Hornet for his own handiwork, the watch half-hidden behind it.
