All the Old Knives is almost entirely two people at a dinner table. Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison were CIA officers and lovers at the Vienna station; years later he flies to Carmel to take her to dinner and work out, between courses, which of them let a planeload of hostages die. Chris Pine plays Pelham and Thandiwe Newton plays Celia, and the film, which Olen Steinhauer adapted from his own novel for the director Janus Metz, runs on what the two of them will show each other and what they will not.
On Pelham's wrist is a Seiko Presage "Cocktail Time," reference SRPE43, a 38.5mm automatic with a blue sunburst dial and a matching blue leather strap. The Cocktail Time began as a Japan-only watch in 2010, its gradient dials modeled on cocktails by the Ginza bartender Shinobu Ishigaki, and Seiko later sold it worldwide under the Presage name. It runs a few hundred dollars and wears like more.
The watch has almost nothing to do with the plot, but Janus Metz keeps finding room for it, with a few unhurried close-ups across the dinner and one shot, early on, that seems framed only to let you see it on Pelham's wrist.
