Steve Trevor died in 1918 and comes back in 1984 in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), wearing another man's body after Diana's wish. Chris Pine plays him through a long fish-out-of-water stretch, and during the department-store montage he ends up with a cheap steel Casio digital on his wrist, the watch he later hands to Diana. To a man from the age of trench warfare and pocket watches, a display with no hands and a light that turns on at the press of a button is close to magic.
The watch is a Casio A168WA, the silver, steel-braceleted relative of the resin F-91W and about as inexpensive, roughly twenty to forty dollars. There is one wrinkle: the A168 line did not appear until the 1990s, so it is a quiet anachronism in a 1984 story. It still reads as the throwaway digital that defined the decade.
Watch-spotting sites identify it as the A168WA-1, and on Pine's wrist the steel case and bracelet are clear even with the display turned away. The comedy is in the gap between Trevor, for whom a battery watch is the future, and the audience, for whom it is the most disposable thing in the mall.
