John Tyree is on leave from the Army when Dear John begins, home in South Carolina for a few weeks before he ships out again. Channing Tatum plays him in Lasse Hallström's 2010 adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel, a Special Forces soldier who meets a college student named Savannah, played by Amanda Seyfried, over a single summer. He spends most of the film either falling for her or writing to her from a deployment, which is where the title comes from.
The watch on his wrist is a Suunto X10, the version Suunto called the Military. It is less a watch than a wrist computer. The writeup of the film from WatchShop describes the negative display, light text on a dark dial, and lists what is packed inside: an altimeter, a compass, a barometer, and GPS that records routes, marks waypoints, and tracks speed and distance, then syncs to a computer. The Military name refers only to that dark negative screen.
In the beach scene here, Tatum carries a yellow surfboard out of the surf with Savannah hugging his side, and the watch is still on his wrist: a big round black case on a rubber strap, the kind of thing a soldier wears in the field and, going by this shot, in the water too.
