Channing Tatum wears a Nixon 51-30 Chrono

A male stripper saving every dollar to start a custom furniture business should not be wearing a watch built to survive a shipwreck, and that is exactly why it works. In the scene, Mike Lane leans across a small club table from Dallas, the strip-club impresario Matthew McConaughey plays in a cowboy hat and a cut-off vest, with a glass of bourbon and an open ledger between them. They are talking money in the dim, fairy-lit room, and on Mike's right wrist sits an oversized round chronograph: a polished steel case catching the club lights, a dark dial crowded with sub-dials, a plain black rubber strap. It reads big and sporty, not dressy, which is the whole point of casting Channing Tatum's body and then dressing the man down.

Steven Soderbergh based Magic Mike (2012) loosely on Tatum's own stint as a Tampa stripper at nineteen, and the wardrobe carries that lived-in quality rather than an art-directed gloss. Mike hustles roofing jobs by day and strips at night, putting away cash for a furniture line nobody around him takes seriously. The watch fits him better than any of them realize. Nixon launched in 1998 out of Encinitas, on the Southern California coast, aiming squarely at the action-sports market of surfers and skaters and snowboarders, and the 51-30 Chrono is its loudest statement piece. The name encodes the spec sheet, a 51mm stainless case rated to 30 ATM, which is 300 meters of water resistance, an analog six-hand quartz chronograph driven by a Japanese Miyota movement with the crown and pushers stacked at nine o'clock and a unidirectional countdown bezel.

Nixon has long pitched the 51-30 on a deserted-island premise, the one watch that would last until rescue, which is how a fashion-tier chronograph in the few-hundred-dollar range ends up rated for 300 meters. That is the joke the frame sets up: a guy talking startup money over bourbon, a man who can barely survive a business conversation, wearing a watch engineered to outlive a shipwreck. The brand and model never resolve on the dial, so the read rests on size and shape and configuration, a large steel analog chrono with the 51-30's stacked nine-o'clock crown and pushers. On a character whose night job is being looked at, a 51mm watch is not an accident.
