Cate Blanchett plays Mary Mapes in Truth, the CBS News producer behind the 2004 report on George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard service that blew up in everyone's faces. James Vanderbilt adapted Mapes's memoir for this 2015 drama about the scandal that ended her career and pushed Dan Rather out the door at CBS. Blanchett's Mapes believes she has a real story, and watching her frustration build as document authenticity questions drown out everything else is genuinely uncomfortable. Robert Redford plays Rather, and the supporting cast includes Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss, and Dennis Quaid. What sticks with you is how the story became about the story itself, with bloggers and political operatives tearing apart the documents while nobody ever really answered the underlying questions about Bush's service. Blanchett sells Mapes's conviction completely, even when you can see everything falling apart around her. The film landed when trust in media was already crumbling, which made the whole thing feel more relevant than anyone probably wanted. Her watch has not been identified.
