Cate Blanchett wears a Rolex Bubble Back

Lydia Tár wears her watch turned inward. Through Todd Field's Tár (2022) the dial rests against the underside of her wrist rather than on top of it, so to read the time she has to turn her wrist over. Cate Blanchett plays her as a celebrated conductor and the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, exacting and guarded, and the film follows her from the height of that power into its undoing. It opens with her on a festival stage explaining her trade: time is the thing, she says, and the orchestra cannot start without her.

The watch is a vintage yellow gold Rolex on a brown leather strap. Through most of the film it gives up only the warm gold of its case against her skin, the dial kept against the wrist and out of view. Hodinkee got the closer look. Working from a brief in-focus close-up, the magazine read a squared case and a dial of applied Arabic numerals alternating with applied markers, and called it a yellow gold Bubbleback in the reference 5050 family, most likely from the 1950s.

The Bubbleback earned its name from the domed caseback Rolex needed in the early 1930s to clear the rotor of its first self-winding movement. It is an old watch rather than anything bought new, the sort a person hunts down. So the conductor whose whole art is the public command of time, who sets the tempo a hundred musicians have to follow, keeps her own clock turned to the inside of her wrist, for her eyes alone.
