James Mangold directed Knight and Day before he made Ford v Ferrari and the last Indiana Jones, and you can see his interest in old-school action filmmaking already taking shape. Tom Cruise plays a rogue CIA agent who kidnaps Cameron Diaz's June Havens at an airport, and the rest of the film is a globetrotting chase where June goes from hostage to willing participant. Mangold treats it as screwball comedy with gunfire, and Diaz plays the escalating absurdity straight enough to make it work.

The Rolex Submariner on June's wrist is an unusual choice for a character introduced as a classic car restorer from Wichita. It's not a fashion watch, it's a 300-meter dive tool on a woman who isn't diving, fighting, or doing anything that would require a timing bezel. That's probably the point. The costume department gave her a watch that signals competence before the script does. By the time June is handling weapons and navigating international espionage in the third act, the Submariner has stopped looking out of place.

The Submariner belongs to the version of Diaz that Hollywood used less often than it should have: physical, funny, and tougher than the movie around her.
