Hal Needham directed his first film here after years as Burt Reynolds's stunt double and roommate. The premise, hauling 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana to Atlanta in 28 hours, only works if you know that Coors was not distributed east of the Mississippi in the 1970s, which made it contraband. Sally Field plays the runaway bride who climbs into the Trans Am. Jackie Gleason plays Sheriff Buford T. Justice. The film was the second-highest-grossing release of 1977, behind only Star Wars.

On the Bandit's wrist is a Timex Viscount, a chrome-cased automatic from 1972 with a black dive bezel and a date window at three. Timex built its name on inexpensive, durable watches, and this was one of them. What set it apart in the film was the cuff: the watch sits in an oxidized silver Navajo bracelet set with turquoise, and the pairing became iconic enough that Native American silversmiths still reproduce it. Reynolds was the top box-office star in America for the next several years, and on screen the Bandit wore a Timex.
