Burt Reynolds plays Paul Crewe in The Longest Yard, a former NFL quarterback doing prison time after a point-shaving scandal, whom Warden Hazen (Eddie Albert) presses into building a team of inmates to take on the guards in a brutal exhibition game. Ed Lauter plays the warden's enforcer, Captain Knauer, and Richard Kiel turns up as the towering Samson. Reynolds had been a halfback at Florida State before a knee injury pushed him into acting, and the football scenes carry the weight of someone who actually played.
Before prison, in his flashy early-1970s clothes, Crewe wears a gold digital watch that BAMF Style reads as a Hamilton Pulsar P2. The Pulsar was the first electronic digital watch, launched in 1972; it kept its display dark and lit the time in red LEDs only when you pressed the button, and the early gold version sold for around 2,100 dollars. It was wrist-worn science fiction, and audiences had just seen the same watch on Roger Moore in the 1973 Bond film Live and Let Die.
