Burt Lancaster plays Gerald Cross, a veteran CIA operative in Michael Winner's 1973 spy thriller, a man who learns that the agency he served for decades has marked him for death. Alain Delon plays Jean Laurier, code-named Scorpio, the freelance assassin Cross once trained and who is now ordered to kill him. Paul Scofield plays a Soviet intelligence man Cross knows from the trade.
Lancaster wears a Rolex Air-King, its silver dial reading Air-King over Precision beneath the Rolex crown. The Air-King is the plainest Rolex, a 34mm Oyster with a time-only dial, no date and no rotating bezel. Rolex first used the Air-King name in the 1940s, when it honored RAF pilots, and the watch sat at the entry point of the range for decades.
