Bruce Willis wears a Lanco

Hart's War (2002) is one of the films where Bruce Willis tried to do something different. Gregory Hoblit directed this World War II drama, with Willis as Colonel William McNamara, the senior American officer in a German POW camp, and Colin Farrell as the young lieutenant at the center of a murder trial McNamara is quietly using as cover for an escape plan. Willis plays him restrained and calculating, a man running a scheme nobody sees coming.

The watch on McNamara's wrist is a Lanco, the Swiss maker of affordable mid-century watches, on a brown leather strap. The identification comes from the production itself: Propstore sold McNamara's screen-worn accessories with a certificate of authenticity, the Lanco among his glasses, wedding band, dog tags stamped Stalag 318, and a pack of Lucky Strikes. The prison-camp lighting rarely gives the wrist a clean look, but the prop is the watch the production dressed him in, and a period-correct Swiss Lanco is exactly right for a captured American colonel in 1944.
