Guillermo del Toro set Nightmare Alley in the 1940s and gave Bradley Cooper a watch from the 1920s. The Hamilton Hastings is a 14-karat gold Art Deco rectangle, circa 1928, and it belongs to Stanton Carlisle's dead father. It's not an accessory. It's a plot object. Carlisle carries it through his rise from carnival geek shows to high-society mentalist to inevitable ruin, and the watch connects every version of the character to the trauma he can't outrun.

Hamilton was still an American company when the Hastings was made, operating out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The watch is from the era when Hamilton competed with Elgin and Waltham for the domestic market, before the Swiss took over. Del Toro's period accuracy is meticulous, and putting a late-1920s Hamilton on a character who starts working carnivals in the 1930s means the watch was already old when Carlisle inherited it. It arrived damaged and stayed that way.

Cooper's nine sightings cover a wide range. Maurice Lacroix in The Hangover, Casio G-Shock in American Sniper, IWC in Aloha and American Hustle, Bulova Accutron in Maestro. The Hamilton Hastings is the oldest watch in his collection by decades, and it's the only one that functions as a character in its own right rather than a costume detail.
