Marc Forster's World War Z (2013) is a $190 million zombie thriller that survived a famously troubled production, including a from-scratch rewrite of its third act. Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator pulled out of retirement to trace the origin of the outbreak, and at one point he peels back the protective pad strapped to his forearm just to check the time.

The watch under it is a Terra Cielo Mare Orienteering PVD, reference TC7008PVD3PA, and for the brand the moment was a debut. Terra Cielo Mare is a small Italian independent, and the placement was, in the words of CEO Luca Fontana, a happy accident: the costume designer, Mayes Rubeo, was hunting in Italy for something capable but under-the-radar, found the Orienteering, and by her account the company sent seven of them for Pitt to wear. The watch is a chunky 44mm in black-PVD titanium, running an ETA 2824 automatic, with a left-hand crown and an inner bezel that works as a solar compass, finding north by the position of the sun. The caseback hides a celestial-map medallion for doing the same at night by the North Star.

None of that orientation kit gets used on screen, but it suits the part. A legible, battery-free mechanical watch with a compass built into it is exactly what an end-of-the-world field investigator would want on his wrist.
