Heart of the Beast is David Ayer's survival thriller, released on September 25, 2026, with Brad Pitt as James Belmont, a former Army Special Forces soldier whose small plane goes down in the Alaskan wilderness. His only company is a retired service dog named Odin, and the film follows his attempt to cross the backcountry and get out alive. Pitt produced it through Plan B, and it was shot in the mountains around Queenstown, New Zealand.
The image here comes from the set rather than the finished film: a camera operator films Pitt, in costume and reading between takes, and a black dive watch rides on the wrist holding the book, on a green and red striped nylon strap that matches the field gear. It is a Rolex Submariner, reference 14060, the no-date model with two lines of text on the dial. Rolex made that version from about 2001 to 2007: a 40 mm steel case with drilled lugs, an aluminum bezel insert and calibre 3130 inside, rated to 300 m. The 14060 family ran from 1990 to 2012 and was the last Submariner built with the aluminum bezel and lug holes. Belmont wears his with a Waltham wrist compass on the same strap.
Ayer, a Navy veteran, picked the watch as a nod to Will Chesney, the SEAL Team Six dog handler who went on the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden with Cairo, a 70-pound Belgian Malinois. Chesney wore his own two-line no-date Submariner that night. "I thought it would be fitting to wear the watch on that operation since it was my gift to myself," he has said. The strap came off a real wrist too. Ayer saw it on someone else, insisted on that exact strap and watch, and the founder of NDC Straps had to dig four of them out of stock that had not been produced for years.
Odin is played by Uber, a mountain rescue dog from New Zealand.
