A Simple Favor is Paul Feig's 2018 film, a glossy thriller folded inside a dark comedy and adapted by Jessica Sharzer from Darcey Bell's novel. Anna Kendrick plays Stephanie, an earnest mommy vlogger who falls into the orbit of Emily Nelson, played by Blake Lively. Emily runs public relations for a fashion designer in Manhattan, drinks gin martinis in the middle of the afternoon, and treats the school pickup line like a runway. Then she asks Stephanie for a favor, to collect her son from school, and disappears.
Emily's clothes do a lot of the work. She dresses in men's tailoring: pinstripe three-piece suits, a vest, a bow tie, a wide-brimmed hat, a man's wardrobe recut to fit her. The watch belongs to that look. She wears a Piaget Altiplano in rose gold on an alligator strap, and she wears it on her right wrist.
The Altiplano is Piaget's flat dress watch. Piaget started in 1874 in the Swiss village of La Cote-aux-Fees and made its reputation on thinness, building some of the slimmest mechanical movements anyone had managed by the end of the 1950s, and the Altiplano is the line that still carries that idea. It is the watch that sits flush under a shirt cuff instead of snagging on it, which is what a watch worn with a tailored suit is for.
