It is Christmas Eve in Wichita, Kansas, the streets are sheeted in ice, and two men have just robbed the local mob of two million dollars. Harold Ramis directed The Ice Harvest in 2005 from Scott Phillips's novel, with John Cusack as Charlie Arglist, a lawyer who works for the mob, and Billy Bob Thornton as his partner Vic Cavanaugh, who runs the town's strip clubs and pornography. The film unfolds across one frozen night as Charlie tries to get the money and himself out of town, while the people around him keep turning up dead.
The single published note on Vic's watch calls it a gold Rolex Day-Date, which is close to a tautology, since the Day-Date has only ever been made in gold or platinum. Rolex introduced it in 1956 as the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full across the dial, and it became known as the President, after the bracelet Rolex built for it and the heads of state who took to wearing one. No reference is given and no clear view of the dial survives, the only image to hand being a promotional composite rather than a scene from the film, so the gold Day-Date stands as a single description rather than a confirmed model.
