Hanley wears an unidentified watch in The November Man. Bill Smitrovich plays a CIA bureaucrat navigating the usual spy movie complications of loyalty, betrayal, and who is actually working for whom. His watch is deliberately unremarkable, which makes sense for the character. CIA desk people in movies rarely wear flashy watches. The field operatives get the tactical gear. The managers get something forgettable. Hanley is trying not to draw attention to himself, and an anonymous timepiece fits someone whose job involves staying off radar. The film keeps you guessing about Hanley until late in the story. I like that his watch gives nothing away either. Is it government-issue? Something personal? You cannot tell from looking at it, and that is the point. In spy thrillers where everyone is hiding something, the unremarkable details sometimes matter most. Hanley is present but trying to be unnoticed. His watch does the same thing. It tells time and nothing else.
