Bill Paxton wears a Rolex Submariner

The gold Rolex Submariner on Bill Paxton's wrist in Titanic was not a prop. Underwater cinematographer Al Giddings, who served as co-producer on James Cameron's film, loaned his personal reference 1680/8 in 18-karat yellow gold to the production. Sotheby's later verified it as screen-worn when the watch appeared at auction. The "Nipple Dial" variant, named for its raised, applied hour markers, is one of the more collectible Submariner configurations, and Giddings wore it during actual deep-sea expeditions before it ended up on a movie set.

Brock Lovett is a treasure hunter rather than a diver, operating from a research vessel above the wreck site, surrounded by submersibles and sonar. The gold Submariner suits him: it signals someone who has made his money from the ocean and treats it as a business, where a working diver would wear steel.
