Bill Murray wears a Rolex Datejust

Bob Harris has come a long way to feel this far from home. In Sofia Coppola's 2003 Lost in Translation, Bill Murray plays Harris, a fading American movie star parked in a Tokyo hotel to shoot a Suntory whisky commercial for a paycheck he cannot quite respect. Jet-lagged and sleepless, he falls into the orbit of Charlotte, a young woman played by Scarlett Johansson who is just as adrift, and the film is mostly the two of them keeping each other company at three in the morning. On Harris's wrist throughout is a steel Rolex Datejust, reference 16234, with the fluted white-gold bezel and Jubilee bracelet that define the model.

The Datejust is the watch that taught the world to expect a date on the wrist. Rolex launched it in 1945 as the first self-winding chronometer to change its date automatically at midnight, and a few years later added the small Cyclops magnifier over the window so the number was easy to read at a glance. The 16234, built from the late 1980s into the 2000s, is the version most people picture when they hear the name: a 36mm steel case, a white-gold fluted bezel, and the Cyclops magnifier over the date.
