A year before The Friend reached theaters, an on-set photo surfaced from New York: Bill Murray, hands on his knees, face to face with an enormous Great Dane, an Oris Big Crown Caliber 473 on his wrist. Murray plays Walter, a writer and mentor whose suicide sets the story in motion. Scott McGehee and David Siegel wrote and directed the adaptation of Sigrid Nunez's novel, winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction, and the dog in the photo matters as much as the man: Walter leaves behind a senior Great Dane named Apollo, and his friend Iris is the one asked to take him in. Walter himself appears in flashbacks.
Oris released the Caliber 473 in January 2023, its tenth in-house movement in nine years, with a 120-hour power reserve inside a 38-millimeter Big Crown case. The dial is powder blue with white Arabic numerals, a small-seconds subdial, and a red arrow-tipped pointer for the date, and the whole package sold for under 4,500 dollars. Oris does not pay to place its watches in film or television, so the Big Crown reached Walter's wrist without the brand's involvement.
