Bill Murray plays Don Johnston in Broken Flowers, an aging lothario who receives an anonymous letter claiming he has a 19-year-old son and sets off to visit his former girlfriends to figure out which one sent it. Jim Jarmusch directed this 2005 comedy-drama, which lets Murray do what he does best: sit in uncomfortable situations and react with minimal expression while everything around him gets strange. Don is wealthy, bored, and recently dumped when the letter arrives, and his amateur-detective neighbor convinces him to make the trip. The ex-girlfriends include Sharon Stone, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, and Tilda Swinton, each a different version of what Don's life might have been. Jarmusch shoots Don's encounters with deadpan patience, letting scenes breathe in ways most American comedies would not allow. Murray earned a lot of awards attention for the performance, which requires him to be present and reactive without ever pushing. His watch has not been identified.
