The Audemars Piguet on Bill Murray's wrist in Scrooged (1988) is his own watch. It is a gold Audemars Piguet perpetual calendar, the kind that tracks the day, date, month, and moon phase and winds itself so long as it is worn. Left in a drawer through a long shoot it would stop, and Murray had to take it to the Audemars Piguet boutique to be wound and reset, at a charge of around 150 dollars, a fee he resented. Co-writer Howard Franklin, in a 25th-anniversary interview, said that Murray, tired of paying it film after film, asked the production to write the watch into the movie.
Murray plays Frank Cross, a network television executive so consumed by his career that he has curdled into Scrooge. The watch is a fittingly expensive thing for the part, though Murray wore it for reasons entirely his own.
