Bill Murray wears an Audemars Piguet Quantième

During the robbery that opens Quick Change, Grimm runs the bank floor in clown makeup and white gloves, a pistol in one hand. In the vault, one of the hostages, a Wall Street type, tries to buy his way out by handing over his watch: an 18-karat gold Audemars Piguet that shows the day, date, month, and moon phase, worth twelve thousand dollars, he says, and going up every day. Grimm feels for him and pays three hundred dollars plus his own Timex on a flexiband for it.

The robbery is the part of the film that goes well; the rest is three thieves who cannot get out of New York. Grimm is played by Bill Murray, who also co-directed Quick Change, the only film he has ever directed, and the Audemars Piguet on the hostage's wrist was his own. Howard Franklin, the credited screenwriter, told the story to Entertainment Weekly for the movie's twenty-fifth anniversary, when an interviewer asked whether Murray had helped write it.

A watch that reads the day, date, month, and moon phase and winds itself is a perpetual calendar, and it keeps time only while it is on a wrist. Murray took his off for the months he spent shooting, it stopped, and restarting it meant carrying it to the Audemars Piguet store on Fifth Avenue, where they charged a hundred and fifty dollars to wind it. He paid that after every picture. So he told Franklin to write the watch into this one.
