George Sluizer's The Vanishing (1988), Spoorloos in Dutch, is one of the most disturbing films ever made about ordinary evil. Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu plays Raymond Lemorne, a French chemistry teacher who abducts a woman from a highway service station while her boyfriend is inside.
On Lemorne's wrist is a Pulsar Pulsimeter, a digital watch whose brand and pulse function are both legible on screen. Beyond telling time, it measures pulse rate: you press the button, count heartbeats, and it returns beats per minute, a tool meant for medical use. It suits a character who approaches abduction like an experiment, rehearsing his method at the station and timing himself before he finally succeeds.
