Olivier Marchal was a police officer before he was a filmmaker, and Carbone (2017) takes its plot from a real case his old colleagues would know well: the VAT fraud on European carbon quotas, run between 2008 and 2009 and remembered in France as the heist of the century. Benoît Magimel plays Antoine Roca, a man about to lose his family's road transport business, who builds a version of that scam to stay solvent. The money arrives fast and the people it attracts arrive faster; Gérard Depardieu plays Aron Goldstein, the financier whose orbit Roca should never have entered.

The French site Montres-de-Luxe identified the watch on Roca's wrist as a steel Rolex Daytona, a vintage model, and added the detail that makes this record interesting: "Il s'agit très probablement de la montre personnelle de l'acteur," very probably Magimel's own watch. No reference number has ever been published, no other outlet covered it, and the production stills frame Roca in close profile with his wrists out of shot, so the identification stands on the French report alone. A vintage steel Daytona on a businessman running a billion-euro paper fraud is at least the right register; the site's claim that the actor supplied it himself is the part worth remembering.
