Benicio del Toro wears a Rolex GMT-Master

In Steven Soderbergh's Che: Part Two, Benicio del Toro crouches against a stone wall with an M1 carbine, a steel Rolex on his left wrist. The film follows Ernesto Guevara's 1967 guerrilla campaign in Bolivia, his attempt to repeat the Cuban revolution, which instead ended in his capture and execution that October.

The watch is historically accurate rather than a costume choice. Photographs document Che wearing a Rolex GMT-Master in his last years, and the Italian Rolex reference publishers Mondani identify it as a ref 1675. One widely circulated picture shows him in two Rolexes at once, a Submariner on one wrist and the GMT-Master on the other. He is said to have had the GMT-Master on October 9, 1967, the day the Bolivian army executed him. Soderbergh, whose film The Guardian called accurate to the letter of history, put both watches on del Toro, and the French watch press logged a GMT-Master and a Submariner across Part Two.

Rolex built the GMT-Master in 1954 with Pan American World Airways, for pilots who needed to read two time zones at once. A fourth hand and a 24-hour bezel track the second zone, and the waterproof Oyster case rides on a steel Oyster bracelet, which is what shows on del Toro's wrist in the Bolivia scenes. Del Toro lost weight to play Guevara in decline, and the steel Rolex on his thinning arm matches the watch the man himself is documented wearing to the end.
