On a grey afternoon in upstate New York, three men sit shoulder to shoulder on the tailgate of a pickup, and the one in the middle is the reason the other two are there. Beau Knapp plays Martin Duran Jr., the bank auditor everyone calls Marty, wedged between his estranged father, played by Kurt Russell, and his brother Caleb, played by Luke Hemsworth, back on the family farm in Elba. John Stalberg Jr.'s Crypto (2019) is a money-laundering thriller, and Marty is its unlikely engine, an anti-money-laundering analyst demoted out of the New York office to his small hometown branch, where the numbers that refuse to add up turn out to lead back to the people he reports to.
Look at his left wrist in the tailgate scene and there is a round watch with a dark case and a dark dial on a dark strap, worn over the cuff of a tan work jacket. It is a plain, functional thing, no logo and no flourish, the kind of watch a salaried auditor in a small town actually owns. Marty is not a man who buys a watch to be seen in. He reads ledgers for a living, and the most dangerous thing he ever does is notice.
