Ben Wheatley's Rebecca (2020) is a Netflix adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel, with Lily James as the unnamed second Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer as the widower Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas as the housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. It is a period piece, set in Monte Carlo and at the Cornish estate Manderley in the late 1930s.
Chopard partnered with the production, dressing several of its leads, and the watch on Maxim's wrist is the brand's L.U.C Heritage Grand Cru, reference 162296-5001. It is a piece of serious watchmaking: a tonneau-shaped case in 18-carat rose gold, a white porcelain-style dial with gilded Dauphine hands, and the in-house, self-winding L.U.C 97.01-L movement. The L.U.C line is named after Chopard's founder, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, and it is the high-horology side of a house better known for its Happy Diamonds jewelry. It is also an anachronism: the L.U.C line did not exist until the 1990s, so no version of this watch could have been on a wrist in 1938.
