Mike Hammer does not do subtlety. Mickey Spillane's detective solves problems with his fists and asks questions later, and Armand Assante plays him that way in Richard T. Heffron's I, the Jury (1982), which drags Spillane's 1947 novel into the neon and sleaze of early-eighties Manhattan. Larry Cohen wrote the script. Paul Sorvino plays Hammer's friend on the force, Pat Chambers, and Barbara Carrera is the psychiatrist Hammer falls for while the bodies pile up.
On Hammer's wrist is what looks like a steel Rolex Explorer II. In 1982 the only Explorer II Rolex made was the reference 1655, introduced in 1971 with a fixed 24-hour bezel and a bright orange 24-hour hand. Rolex built it for cavers and polar researchers who could lose track of day and night underground or in the midnight sun, which is a long way from a private eye working the bars and apartments of New York.
