Sam Wilson is a soldier before he is a superhero. When Anthony Mackie first turns up in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he is running laps around the National Mall and leading a support group for veterans at the VA, a former pararescueman who lost his wingman overseas. The Russo brothers spend a while establishing him as an ordinary, decent guy before Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff drag him into their fight with a compromised S.H.I.E.L.D.
On his wrist in those early scenes is a Humvee Field Watch, identified by the watch site Wrist Enthusiast. Humvee is a budget label of rugged, military-styled field watches that borrowed its name from the Army truck, the opposite of a luxury placement. It suits a working veteran, cheap and tough and not trying to impress anyone, and it is easy to miss on screen.
What makes it worth noting is what came later. When Mackie came back as Sam Wilson in the 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the character had a watch sponsor: he wears a Citizen Chandler through the show, part of a Citizen tie-in. The veteran who once wore an anonymous field watch in the movie picked up a brand deal on television, which is its own kind of promotion.
