Roger East was shot by Indonesian soldiers on a wharf in Dili, East Timor, in December 1975, and his body was thrown into the sea. He had gone there to investigate the disappearance of five Australia-based journalists, the Balibo Five, killed by Indonesian forces weeks before. Robert Connolly and David Williamson's Balibo (2009) tells both stories. Anthony LaPaglia, who also produced the film, plays East; a young Oscar Isaac plays José Ramos-Horta, the Timorese activist who talked him into coming, and who would later win the Nobel Peace Prize and become the country's president.
The watch is harder to pin down than the history. The single watch publication to examine it calls the piece on East's wrist a vintage steel Rolex Submariner, and says so cautiously, reading the model from the bracelet and admitting it is hard to be certain. A waterproof tool watch like that suits a correspondent working in the tropics in 1975, and nothing on screen argues against it. But no available frame shows the wrist closely enough to confirm a reference, and no other source has looked, so the Submariner stays a careful guess rather than a settled fact.
