At his surprise birthday party in a lodge in Alaska, Charles Morse unwraps a gold pocket watch, a gift from his wife. Anthony Hopkins plays Morse in Lee Tamahori's The Edge, a billionaire whose head is full of obscure, useful knowledge: he can build a compass from a magnetized needle, name edible plants on sight, and recite the survival books he reads for pleasure. David Mamet wrote the screenplay, a wilderness thriller that turns on whether the photographer in Morse's party, Bob Green (Alec Baldwin), means to kill him and take his wife, Mickey (Elle Macpherson). A Kodiak bear turns out to be the more pressing danger.
The watch is a Hamilton pocket watch, engraved for the occasion. Later, stranded in the wild, Morse puts it to work: he frees the thin steel second hand and floats it on a leaf in a puddle of water, turning it into a compass. Hopkins also wears a plain round wristwatch on a leather strap in the lodge scenes, which has never been identified.
