Solène Marchand runs an art gallery in Los Angeles, raises her daughter on her own, and at forty meets Hayes Campbell, the twenty-four-year-old singer of the boy band August Moon, at Coachella. Michael Showalter directed The Idea of You and co-wrote it with Jennifer Westfeldt from Robinne Lee's novel, a book widely speculated to have been inspired by Harry Styles. Anne Hathaway plays Solène, Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes, and after a South by Southwest premiere the film landed on Prime Video on May 2, 2024, where it became Amazon's most popular film worldwide that year, with reviews running 81 percent positive and most of the credit going to Hathaway.
The watch is a TAG Heuer Carrera Date, 39 millimeters in steel with a brushed silver sunray dial and the Calibre 5 automatic inside, and it works as a third character. Hayes gets it when his manager tells him he has landed the TAG Heuer campaign, a brand deal written into the story. Then he meets Solène at her house in Los Angeles and deliberately leaves the watch on her table, planting the excuse for another meeting; when she finally accepts his invitation to New York, she knocks on his hotel door wearing it. From there the film passes the Carrera back and forth. Whenever the couple is together, Solène has it, and when they are apart, Hayes wears it. In one scene she keeps it on after everything else comes off, and on her wrist it rides noticeably loose, a 39 millimeter watch sized for him.
