Andy Serkis wears a Hublot Big Bang Chronograph

Andy Serkis has spent much of his career wearing other faces, Gollum, Caesar, Snoke, performances captured and rebuilt digitally. David Robey required the opposite kind of construction. For Luther: The Fallen Sun, Neil Cross's Netflix continuation of his BBC series, directed by Jamie Payne and released to theaters in February 2023 and to Netflix that March, Serkis bleached his own hair through hours of peroxide washes to build the look, and heard it compared to Siegfried and Roy and to David Soul. Robey is a wealthy and psychopathic millionaire turned serial killer who runs the Red Bunker, a live stream where kidnapped victims are tortured for a paying audience, and who keeps his leverage with stolen data. Idris Elba's Luther breaks out of prison to hunt him, with help from prison guards and an old associate, while Cynthia Erivo's Odette Raine, head of the Serious and Serial Crime Unit, hunts them both.

Montres de Luxe identified a Hublot Big Bang chronograph on Robey's wrist, and the film's penthouse scene puts a dark watch under his cuff exactly where the identification says: silk dressing gown, folding phone in one hand, whiskey in the other. Hublot, founded in Nyon in 1980, built its name on what it calls the Art of Fusion, and the Big Bang is its flagship line.

The sharpest gloss on the choice comes from Serkis himself, who told interviewers that Robey has no style of his own and no personality of his own, only what he observes in other people, and that even with all his money the look does not quite work. The costume runs on that logic, down to the wrist. The critics shrugged at the film, a fairly uninspired addition to the case files in the consensus phrasing, but the borrowed-everything villain was built detail by detail, and the watch is one of the details.
