Al Franken and Ronald Bass wrote the screenplay for When a Man Loves a Woman (1994), Luis Mandoki's domestic drama about an airline pilot, Michael Green, married to an alcoholic, Alice (Meg Ryan). Andy Garcia plays Michael. Philip Seymour Hoffman has a small early role as Gary, and a five-year-old Mae Whitman plays one of the daughters.
On Michael's wrist is a Breitling Navitimer, identified by a watch-spotting site and consistent with the chronograph visible in family scenes: a busy three-register dial under a marked bezel. Breitling introduced the Navitimer in 1952 with a circular slide rule for in-flight calculations, and it became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. On an airline pilot it is practically a uniform requirement. Michael flies planes, so he wears a pilot's watch.
