Ali MacGraw wears a Caravelle

On a Texas roadside, against the white sedan that has carried them through the wreckage of Doc McCoy's bank job, Steve McQueen grabs a shouting Ali MacGraw by the lapel of her brown suede coat. This is the marriage Sam Peckinpah built The Getaway (1972) around, a couple coming apart at the same speed as their own escape. MacGraw plays Carol McCoy, the wife who engineers Doc's release from prison and then runs with him across Texas as the heist unravels. The film is nearly as famous for what happened off screen, where MacGraw left producer Robert Evans for her co-star during the shoot and married McQueen the following year.

Carol wears almost no accessories, just a Caravelle watch and a gold Cartier Love bracelet, and the bracelet was not a prop at all. It was a real gift to MacGraw from Evans, her own jewelry worn on screen by a character who was, in life, leaving him. The watch is plainer and more fitting. Bulova launched Caravelle in 1962 as its affordable line, jeweled movements in modest cases, and by the late 1960s it was the best-selling jeweled-watch brand in the United States, the kind of real-person watch Peckinpah's costuming would put on a fugitive's wife rather than a glamour piece. It never sits close enough to the camera to read a model, so the brand is as far as it honestly goes.
