Hal is the easy, generous host by the pool here, white linen and a cold drink, the kind of man everyone trusts with their money. Which is the trouble. Woody Allen wrote him as a Madoff in good tailoring, a financier whose fortune turns out to be one long fraud.
What's on his wrist? A Cartier Ballon Bleu. You can read it cold from the rounded steel case and the little guard hooding the blue cabochon crown, Roman numerals and blued hands under the glass. Cartier is the name you reach for when you want people to assume the money is old.
But the Ballon Bleu only launched in 2007 - one of the youngest designs in the whole Cartier catalog, not a watch handed down from anyone's grandfather. Which is Hal all over: a man performing inherited wealth he never had, right down to the watch.
