Aldis Hodge builds watches. Not as a brand ambassador but as an actual watchmaker, designing his own movements by hand, a craft he has talked through at length on Hodinkee Radio. That makes the watch on his wrist in One Night in Miami... (2020) worth a closer look than most.
He plays Jim Brown in Regina King's film, which imagines the night in February 1964 when Brown, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and the newly crowned Cassius Clay gathered in a Miami motel room after Clay beat Sonny Liston. On Brown's wrist is a gold dress watch on a gold bracelet. When Prop Store auctioned Brown's screen-used accessories, the watch among them was cataloged only as a 'gold-color metal watch,' with no brand and no model.
The record here previously named the watch a Benrus. Nothing in the auction provenance, or in any watch source, supports that attribution, so it stands as what the listing and the screen actually show: an unidentified gold dress watch.
