Philip Raven kills two people in the first five minutes of This Gun for Hire and then stops to pet a cat. That contradiction is the whole movie. Frank Tuttle directed this 1942 noir, which gave Alan Ladd his breakout role as a hired killer who is paid in marked bills and goes after the men who set him up. Veronica Lake plays a nightclub singer tangled in the same conspiracy, and the chemistry between Ladd and Lake — both short, both blonde, both cool to the point of seeming frozen — was strong enough to put them in three more films together. Ladd plays Raven as someone who has been hurt so badly as a child that killing barely registers, but kindness from a stranger almost breaks him.
His watch has not been identified. The available image shows Ladd in a trench coat with gun drawn, his wrists hidden by the sleeves. The existing description mentions a tank-style watch, but nothing in this image confirms that.
