Alain Delon plays Jacques Batkin in José Giovanni's Comme un boomerang (1976), released in English as Boomerang. Batkin is a businessman who made his money in the underworld and left it behind, until his teenage son kills a policeman during a drug-fueled night on the Riviera. To save the boy, Batkin goes back to the criminal world he had climbed out of, working his old connections to engineer an escape and risking everything he has built. Giovanni, who had been a criminal himself and once sat on death row before turning to writing and directing, knew the territory.

On Delon's wrist is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the model the watch world calls the Jumbo. Gérald Genta drew it for Audemars Piguet in 1972, a luxury sports watch in steel with an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws and a bracelet machined as part of the case. It cost more than many gold watches, which scandalised a Swiss industry that had always equated price with precious metal. The one Delon wears here was his own. He kept it for decades and wore it in other films, and in 2012 it sold at auction for 68,750 euros, far above its estimate.
