Al Palagonia wears a Rolex Day-Date

In Spike Lee's He Got Game (1998), Jesus Shuttlesworth, the most coveted high-school basketball prospect in the country, spends the film fending off everyone who wants to buy a piece of his future. One of them is Dom Pagnotti, a sports agent played by Al Palagonia, who arrives with a watch instead of a contract. He holds a Rolex out toward the camera, dangled where Jesus can see it, and calls it a gift with no strings. "That's a thirty-six-thousand-dollar watch," he says. "That's like having a Corvette on your wrist." Jesus turns it down, because a high-school recruit who accepts it forfeits his eligibility, and the bribe becomes a small test of whether he can be bought.

The prop is a Rolex on the President bracelet, the semi-circular three-piece link design Rolex introduced in 1956 and reserved, for the full-size men's case, to solid gold and 950 platinum. That is why the dialogue's "platinum" settles the model: a platinum men's President is a Day-Date, not a steel Datejust. On screen the dial reads a cool pale silver under warm room light, with a date window and Cyclops at three o'clock and applied markers that catch the light. The film calls it a platinum and diamond Rolex in so many words, though the diamond setting is the script's claim rather than anything the frame can confirm. It is a rare courtesy to a watch-spotter: a movie that prices the watch out loud and benchmarks it against a Corvette, then has its hero refuse it anyway.
