Al Pacino wears a TAG Heuer Monaco

In 88 Minutes, the 2007 thriller Jon Avnet directed, Al Pacino plays Dr. Jack Gramm, a forensic psychiatrist who answers his phone one morning and hears a voice tell him he has eighty-eight minutes left to live. The rest of the film is Gramm trying to outrun that number. On his wrist through the chase is a TAG Heuer Monaco, the square-cased chronograph that is one of the most recognizable watches ever made.

The Monaco Pacino wears is a modern one, a self-winding twelve-hour chronograph on a stainless steel bracelet rather than the leather strap of the original. The shape has not changed since 1969, when Heuer sealed one of the first automatic chronograph movements inside a square, water-resistant steel case and Steve McQueen wore the result in Le Mans. That square is one of the few watch shapes that reads cleanly on camera, which suits a film built around a man watching the minutes run out.
