Adam Brody, fresh off The O.C., plays Carter Webb, a Los Angeles writer of soft-core scripts who loses his actress girlfriend and retreats to suburban Michigan to look after his grandmother, played by Olympia Dukakis, who is sure she is dying. Across the street are Sarah and Lucy Hardwicke, a mother facing breast cancer and her teenage daughter, played by Meg Ryan and a pre-Twilight Kristen Stewart, and Carter gets drawn into both households. Jon Kasdan, a son of Lawrence Kasdan, wrote and directed it as his first feature.
The watch on Carter's wrist has a single identification behind it: a 2018 post on the French watch site Montres de Luxe that names a Hamilton Blaine. The Blaine is a real Hamilton, a small dress watch with a black dial on a leather strap, a name the company has used since its Art Deco pocket watches of the 1940s. That is the whole case. The post names no scene and no reference, and the still it runs to make the point is a head-and-shoulders shot of Brody grinning, cropped well above the wrist. Nothing in the film gives the camera a look at what he is wearing.
